A two-week
program for students 14-15 years old who meet a minimum level of independence
on the YES Daily Living Checklist YES I offers career exploration activities
that include: career interest and aptitude assessments, work site visitations,
guest speakers, mock applications, interviews and resume development. All students participate in community service
projects during the second week of the program.
Each student creates a career portfolio.
Students returning for a second year of YES I have 3-5 job shadowing
experiences. Recreational and daily
living experiences are important elements of YES I.

2008
A six-week
program for students 16 years of age and older who meet a minimum level of
independence on the YES Daily Living Skills Checklist. (Students must be 16
before June 24, ‘08) In cooperation with
the Seattle business community YES II offers students five weeks of paid work
experience. Jobs are assigned to
students based on their interests, experience and ability. YES II students assemble a career education
portfolio complete with information on post high school services that offer
vocational counseling and guidance. A
second component of YES II is the residential living experience that provides
students the opportunity to refine their skills in activities of daily
living. Students are required to plan,
purchase and prepare their meals. YES II
students are responsible for maintaining their clothing, personal effects and
assist with maintaining the common living quarters at the YES residence. Individual assessment of personal management
skills determine whether students require direct daily instruction or moderate
instruction and supervision. YES II
students use public transportation to independently travel to their
worksite. YES II students are encouraged
to participate in community social and recreational activities with their YES
II peers.
Interested?
To be eligible for either level of YES a student must be legally blind
or visually impaired and meet a minimum level of competency in their practice
of Orientation & Mobility and Activities of Daily Living. If you are not sure your child is eligible,
please contact either DSB or WSSB at the numbers listed on this brochure. All applications will be reviewed; some
students may require additional assessment prior to determination of
eligibility.
It is important that each student participating in YES II bring to
the program or have access to, $200 to cover initial expenses for food, a bus
pass and personal incidentals.
