WSSB Parent Listserv

Back

WSSB has created a Parent Listserv for those parents of blind and visually impaired students. We feel this will be a great tool for parents to communicate with other parents.

This list serve is only open to parents of blind and visually impaired children. Suggestions of additional resources can be provided to parents, but it is our intent to keep this listserv as a parent tool, to assist parents with communication with other families without others questioning and or providing input. We believe that parents need to have a tool that is only open to them!

To subscribe, send an e-mail to parentsforum@wssb.wa.gov with just "SUBSCRIBE" (no quotes) in the subject.

Parent’s Forum Listserv Content Rules

1. Stick to the topics intended for discussion on the listserv. If you deviate from the intended discussion topics, someone may recommend a listserv more suited for your thread of discussion.

2. The general guidelines for topics are: Questions about services for blind and visually impaired children, general questions parents may have about raising their child who is blind/visually impaired and general conversations one parent may have with others about various issues in regard to blindness.

3. Identify yourself.

4. Don't use all upper cases when writing. This is thought of as shouting. Subscribers will also refrain from formatting messages -- that is, from using varied and colored fonts, backgrounds, or other visual enhancements -- and will strive to minimize the length of messages.

5. Don't send meaningless messages with no content, such as "I agree!" Include a portion or a summary of the message you are responding to, but don't forward the entire message.

6. Avoid ‘flaming’ individuals on the listserv. If you have a conflict with an individual, settle it by private e-mail messages. Every Subscriber must be respected; no Subscriber should be ridiculed or belittled.

7. Don't be critical of people's queries posted to the listserv. Many people are newbies to the listserv. Send them a private message and "gently" make suggestions if you think it is warranted. We're here to learn, share, and grow from each other.

8. Make sure the message is relevant to everyone. Do not use the listserv to contact only one or a few people who might be on it.

9. When responding to an email received from the listserv, make sure your response only goes out to the person who sent the original message, unless you think your message applies to everyone. (I.e. respond to, or respond to all)

10. Use your common sense. A few hundred people may be signed up on the listserv at any time, so don't give out any private information that you may not want a lot of people knowing.

11. All participants should undertake the steps necessary to prevent transmission of a virus to the Listserv. Failure to take reasonable precautions, such as use of virus protection software, can lead to expulsion from the Listserv. Notification of the existence of a suspected virus should be sent to: Danya.borowski@wssb.wa.gov. A Subscriber may be put in "moderation" mode or temporarily suspended to protect the viability of the Listserv, for example if a Subscriber has a virus or ISP problem.

12. Advertising is expressly forbidden. Prohibited advertising includes, but is not limited to, "signatures" attached to email messages containing a commercial business name, telephone number, street address, or URL hyperlink. No commercial use shall be made of this Listserv or its membership. Participation on this Listserv is not to be considered an indication of an interest or invitation to send solicitations, information or advertisements to other Subscribers. Sending bulk unsolicited advertisements or information of a commercial nature to other Subscribers is a violation of these rules. It is appropriate to share with others upcoming meetings and conferences in relationship to children with disabilities and/or support groups.

13. Subscribers will not forward information contained in Listserv posts off the Listserv without the original author's written permission; transmission of complete Listserv messages off the Listserv is prohibited.

14. Subscribers will not share the individual email addresses of other Subscribers to the Listserv, or referenced on the Listserv, with persons or organizations not on the Listserv, without prior consent of the owner of the email address.

15. Failure to adhere to these rules may result in your removal from the listserv.

These rules have been developed to help maintain a workable listserv that will be of value for parents of blind and visually impaired children. If you believe that there should be modification to these rules or additions, please contact: Danya.borowski@wssb.wa.gov

Here is some additional information regarding the listserv.  When replying, “Reply to all” sends to everyone on the listserv, “Reply” just sends to the individual who has sent out the message.
