The Project: WSSB’s Distance Learning Project currently has four “missions”, or areas identified for inclusion: Mission 1 is to provide online curriculum for WSSB students; Mission 2 is to provide curriculum online for other students not at WSSB; Mission 3 is to provide training for teachers and others in the field who work with students with visual impairments; and Mission 4 is to provide a comprehensive resource for families and others to either search through frequently asked questions or send a query about raising a child with a visual impairment.

Facilitating Emergent Literacy in Younger
Children with Visual Impairment
One of the most crucial components of
a child’s early learning experience is that of literacy. Emergent literacy
refers to the cognitive knowledge and concepts children gather about language,
reading/listening, and the written word. For children with visual impairments,
emergent literacy must include tactile experiences integrated with verbal
language. Pre-braille skills are physical and sensory: tactile perception, fine
motor skills, particularly finger and hand movements, and the ability to
identify braille characters. This course will define emergent literacy and
identify the components of language (spoken, augmentative, and alternative
communication systems), phonological awareness, concept development, knowledge
of the conventions of print/braille and of print/braille intentionality,
alphabetic knowledge, and environmental factors. Strategies and interventions
for promoting literacy in children with VI and additional disabilities will also
be described.
Registration ends at 12:00 AM on Monday, January 30, 2012.
