Intro to VoiceOver & Screen Enlargement on the Mac

Course Description

This course will provide hands-on instruction on using the Mac with VoiceOver and Zoom.  VoiceOver and Zoom are assistive technology software for visually impaired individuals that is built-in to every Macintosh computer.  This assistive technology software is very easy to use and provides the visually impaired population the same access to the computer as sighted individuals.  There will be sharing time of apps that individuals have found that are useful for visually impaired students.

Course Objectives

1.            Able to effectively use the excellent resources available from Apple, both the on-line videos, the on-line training manual, and the documentation

2.            Able to use the VoiceOver tutorial the is built into the Macintosh computer

3.            Able to set up the Macintosh computer so that it can be used most efficiently by a student using VoiceOver or Zoom

4.            Able to describe the Macintosh computer software and the basic keyboard shortcuts

5.            Develop an understanding of the Finder and basic VoiceOver commands

6.            Able to use the Item Chooser in selected applications

7.            Develop an understanding of the VoiceOver concepts of interacting and un-interacting.

8.            Able to navigate the Finder and create files and folders

9.            Able to compile a list of the most frequently used VoiceOver commands

10.          Able to edit information in Pages by character, word, and line.  Able to use the spelling checker in Pages.

11.          Able to configure the screen magnification called Zoom.  Develop an understanding of the three options available for the pointer and able to set Zoom to follow the keyboard focus if desired.

12.          Able to set a minimum and maximum focus size in Zoom and able to adjust the display settings

13.          Able to browse to selected web sites using Safari.  Able to select information and copy this information into Pages.

14.          Able to use the Web Item Rotor in Safari.

15.          Able to use the iPad to write a document in iA Writer and e-mail the document

16.          Able to transfer documents from the iPad in iA Writer to Pages in the Macintosh.
